Cinnamon Ridge Hoodoos

Cinnamon Ridge Hoodoos is a distinctive hiking destination in the Lac du Bois Grasslands Protected Area, west of Kamloops near the airport. The trail is accessed from Ord Road and follows a 4.25-kilometre semi-loop, linear route up the ridge and partway toward Mara Hill. BC Parks rates it as moderate to hard, with steep sections and open, dry grassland terrain.

The area’s hoodoos, narrow canyon and unusual rock pillars were shaped from volcanic rock that formed during eruptions roughly 50 million years ago. Weathering has given the ridge its cinnamon-brown colour, while stream erosion created the slot-like canyon and exposed layers of fragmental volcanic rock. The route provides close views of the formations as well as broad perspectives across the Thompson River valley and surrounding grasslands.

This is a rugged, exposed trail rather than a developed park facility. Conditions can be hot, dry and slippery, with loose rock, steep slopes and cactus along the route. Hikers should remain on designated trails, use appropriate footwear, carry water and keep dogs on leash in accordance with BC Parks regulations.
