KAMLOOPS, BC, January 16, 2019 – The Kamloops Public Market Co-operative (KPM Co-op) conducted a survey over the holiday season to gather input for a proposed year-round public market. Over 800 people responded to a wide range of questions on the survey which concluded December 28th. (Attached in full at the end of this release) KPM Co-op Executive Director Daphane Nelson says, “We are quite satisfied with the results and received a diverse mix of ages and opinions from the survey. This information will be used to help guide the project moving forward.”
Of 827 surveyed, only 368 were not in favour of the Riverside Park location and of these 368, 100 were not in favour of the project moving forward at all. The remaining 459 surveyed either provided a positive response or were undecided about location. Comments here varied but were mainly due to not being sure what impacts the project might have on parking, Heritage House, traffic in the area, etc.
The Kamloops Public Market Co-operative’s next steps are to continue to meet with and engage local business leaders and organizations to take the project from idea to preliminary concept stage. The group is now is beginning to flesh out the details in a development plan. The development plan will be used as evidence to project financials, while also showcasing community support and the vision for the facility to warrant the City’s endorsement in the form of capital funding and a long-term lease agreement with the Kamloops Public Market Co-operative for facility operation. The development plan will be completed by Spring 2019.
Community information sessions are currently being planned and updates will be released on their website. Additional survey results are below. The community can support this project through online share purchases which can be purchased at kamloopspublicmarket.org.
