recently 3 of my friends have had thier $250 skateboards confenscated by "by-aw enforcement" now tis is just bul**** to me because i too am a sk8boarder. And skateboading is not a crime! Why just the other day me and my buddies were skateboarding in riverside park (not allowed to skateboard in riverside park) and by-law on a bvike came up and tole us to leave the property. Yes they didnt take our boards but just less then 15 yards away there were two people (middle aged woman and man ) shotting up around the corner from us and they didnt even get fined but! if 2 or 3 teens are skateboarding is a major crime now. now you tell me witch is worse? please reply and post what you think of by-law and terry lake on the subject of skateboarding. To me it is just a SPORT like hockey or socker or football not a CRIME! |

Hi - I was reading your post and here's what I thought - for what it's worth... First let me say that I believe the skateboarding is a sport as well. It takes a lot of time and dedication and talent to get a good as many of the people I have seen doing what they do. Personally, I just fall on my #*&$* when I try, and so hold those that have the talent and patience to get good in high esteem for keeping with their sport. That being said... Whether we agree or not, skateboarding is not a "crime" in Kamloops, but against city bylaw policies for certain areas of the city. This is because those areas, like parks, are meant to be used by all people (including elderly, and other walking persons) who don't want to be knocked off paths or run into by someone going fast on a skateboard. If you would like to change this - do it proactively - start a petition; present to City Council with valid reasons why this should be changed. The city council is is required to listen to proposals from the public. They are elected officials. They are required to listen to the people they are voted in to govern. Before you give up on this reply, hear me out... The reason the bylaw officer didn't do anything about the junkies you are referring to is because he can't - it's not in his/her mandate to do so. He/She is not an officer of the law - ie. RCMP - and therefore will be "FIRED" if he attempts to go after people like this. It's for his and our protection that he's not allowed - if he doesn't handle things correctly, he, and others around him - may be injured. And, it would amount to a citizen's arrest - which is illegal in Canada btw - because he doesn't have the authority to arrest someone. I know it sucks...but that's why the City has built skate parks for borders, which ensure your and other citizens' safety. It's like driving a car - you wouldn't want someone driving down a path in the park with their car, right? It's because they have their place, just like skateboarding does. I'm not a bylaw agent, an RCMP officer, or a Councilor - just a citizen. If I have misrepresented something here, I apologize, but, this is how understand it |

The issue here is not skateboarding. It's about children not following the rules. If you know skateboarding is not allowed in an area, why on earth would you do it? If all that happened was you had your board confiscated, I say penalties are too light. Stop worrying about the junkies, they are not your concern to deal with. Your concerns should be yourself and your friends. If you think you are the only people with issues in this area, tell the bikers who can't keep up with traffic yet aren't allowed on the sidewalks. If you feel you have a solution, or better way of doing things that will benefit all of the city, not just your "buddies", then grow up and take it to council. Stop ragging on people for doing their job. |
