Gary Pearson is a painter, video artist, and Associate Professor in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at the University of British Columbia Okanagan in Kelowna. He has shown his work widely across Canada as well as in Germany, the USA, and Australia. Dedicated to the development of contemporary art and critical debate, Pearson also curates exhibitions and writes about art. For several years, he was the visual arts reviewer for the regional free entertainment paper, Off Centre. Pearson’s exhibition includes new paintings and video, as well as works from the Kamloops Art Gallery’s permanent collection.
Locations emphasizing transience and travel frequently find their way into Pearson’s work, as they do in his life. Favourite settings for his figurative works in painting and video have recently included train stations, jazz clubs, and diners. Music also plays an important role in his oeuvre, and genres from country to jazz make appearances in his subjects, titles, and style.
Pearson taught briefly at Cariboo College in the 1980s before moving to Kelowna. The Kamloops Art Gallery purchased two major paintings by Pearson in 2006 and 2007, both of which are featured in his solo exhibition. This is Pearson’s first exhibition at the Kamloops Art Gallery and continues the Gallery’s commitment to support and promote artists from Interior B.C. The exhibition is accompanied by a full-colour publication and public programs featuring live poetry and jazz.
