Conservation Corps Comes to the Thompson Valleys

KAMLOOPS – The British Columbia Conservation Corps (BCCC) will undertake two important projects in the Kamloops area this year to support environmental sustainability, MLAs Kevin Krueger and Claude Richmond announced today.

“In order to ensure a strong and healthy environment, the right mix of information, education and enforcement is essential,” said Krueger, MLA for Kamloops-North Thompson. “This investment is a demonstration of our government’s commitment to Kamloops and Thompson Valleys projects that meet those requirements.”

“I’m pleased these projects support the green initiatives of our government and employs our environmentally-minded students,” said Richmond, MLA for Kamloops. “This is an investment in the future of our children and our community.”

Projects for the Kamloops area include:
• Lakeshore Development Compliance - will protect the lakeshore habitat by promoting compliance with regulatory requirements and strengthening enforcement capability by having baseline data available.
• South Thompson Bighorn Sheep - will monitor the habitat condition of the South Thompson Bighorn Sheep range and its ability to support a healthy population.

The provincial government has invested $9 million over the past three years to run the Conservation Corps program. This year, the Ministry of Environment has approved 36 new projects across the province that will employ approximately 150 students and recent grads.

Conservation projects will be diverse and original, ranging from species at risk inventories and monitoring, to habitat restoration, public education and outreach, and a Student Conservation Officer project. Project selection criteria included each project’s consistency with the ministry’s service plan, quality and diversity of the work, and level of involvement from partner environmental agencies.

Other agencies partnering with the Ministry of Environment on BCCC projects include the Nature Trust of BC, the Parks Facility Operators of BC, BC Nature, the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, Habitat Conservation Trust Fund and local governments
