For as long as he can remember, Bill has been fascinated by optical illusions. He loves images that are not initially what they seem or those that trick the connection between your eyes and brain.
Most recently, Bill has been experimenting by using pixels (tiles) that he finds in the real world; he arranges them to create a mosaic that you can see and touch. He loves the way the changing light plays on the different levels of tiles, hiding the image in some light and revealing it in others. Many of Bill’s pieces look different depending on the time of day.
Bill depicts faces in stone and wood mosaics because a large part of the human brain is devoted to recognizing faces, and so it is easier to see than a landscape. When you look at faces, you are drawn to the eyes, so he always pay special attention to the eyes knowing that will be the first place someone will look.
Bill’s main mission as an artist is to evoke an emotional response in the viewer. He lets the individual decide what the piece means to them.
