With school set to resume the Kamloops RCMP wish to remind the community and the motoring public that school zones will take effect September 7th.

The following are simple reminders for youth, parents and motorists of their responsibilities to keep our community safe and accident free this school year.

Parents, please remind your kids to use a safe, direct and pre-planned route if they walk to school. Remind them to walk with a buddy where possible, use a sidewalk when available and not to deviate from the route without advising an adult beforehand. Use a cross walk, look both ways before entering an intersection and walk, don’t run. Make sure the driver makes eye contact with you before you cross the roadway.

A reminder to the motoring public that the onus is on them to drive defensively. At this time of year kids are excited about seeing friends and may not be paying the attention necessary when crossing roadways. Please slow down to posted speed limits in school zones and playground areas and give yourself extra time to get where you may need to go. The police will be stepping up enforcement and remind the public of the hefty fines associated to speeding in school zones. A violation ticket could net you fines ranging from $196.00 to $368.00.

Please buckle up, be aware and stay safe.
